About Lar Matre

Lar Matre Lar Matré was born in California near the middle of the 20th century.

His parents remember that he started drawing just after he started walking, showing his artistic abilities very early on. Upon entering school, he quickly became the class artist, focusing on illustration, but his deep down passion was photography. Life, LOOK, and National Geographic were his favorite picture magazines.

Lar bought his first 35mm camera at the age of 14. He then taught himself processing and printing from library books. Many were returned late … some with a chemical smell.

As an award-winning photographer, Matré went on to shoot print advertising for national clients; produce, direct, and film broadcast advertising; and produce and direct sports programming for ESPN and Spike. He also ran the national advertising for Honda motorcycles, including broadcast, print, and collateral.

After a career in advertising creative positions, Lar retired and returned to his roots of fine art photography, as well as his relatively new love for digital abstract illustrations.

He currently lives in the Nantahala National Forest outside of Murphy, NC, with his German Shepherds, Halle and Koblenz.

NOT SO IMPORTANT: The pronunciation of Lar's name seems to baffle many, but it's actually quite simple: Lar rhymes with bear, and Matré is pronounced: mah-TRAY. No matter how it's been pronounced, he's been called worse ;o)
